2 – Basic operational concepts : Other global modifier keys20 TASCAM DM-4800 User’s ManualOther global modifier keysThere are two other global “modifier” keys which areused to add additional functions to other keys outsidethe key area. These are the CTRL and SHIFT keyslocated at the left of the top panel. These are used to change the function of certain keyslocated outside the screen mode selection key blockas well as for other specialized functions (for exam-ple, see “Setting a USER screen” on page 19).SHIFTed keys are marked with their shifted functionswritten underneath in white on a blue background, and keys modified with the CTRL key have theirmodified labels underneath, with the lettering in blueon a white background.Special controlsThe DM-4800 incorporates a few controls that arenot found on every digital mixer and which thereforemay be a little unfamiliar. These are the PODs, which are located immediatelybelow the display, and the 24 encoders, located abovethe channel strips. The PODsThe DM-4800 has four unmarked encoder/key com-binations (referred to as PODs) below the display. The function of these pods varies according to thecurrent screen display.Very often, in a screen with many controls displayed, the up and down cursor keys are used to move a high-lighting box around the screen. These boxes high-light a maximum of four on-screen rotary controls, which are then controlled by the corresponding PODencoders (immediately below the on-screen con-trols).Note also the contrast control to the right of thePODs.Figure 2.4: Global modifier keysFigure 2.5: POD controls
