2 – Basic operational concepts : Encoders22 TASCAM DM-4800 User’s ManualEncodersThe 24 rotary encoders at the top of each channel canperform a variety of functions, selected using thetwelve keys at the right of the top panel. As you can see, by using these keys, you can set thelevels of channels, busses, and aux sends, even whenyou are not in that particular fader layer. Also, the channel aux send, dynamics processor andEQ setting modes are useful for convenient viewingand setting of a number of channel parameters atonce. The current setting of the encoders can be read fromthe ring of indicators surrounding each encoder; asexplained in “Reading the encoder indicators” onpage 24Other settings are available through the OPTIONENCODER MODE screen:Use the cursor keys to navigate around the “map” ofthe twelve ENCODER MODE keys, the wheel toselect an assignment for the selected key, and theENTER key to complete the assignment.TIPYou may find that the preferences described in“Encoder Mode Follows Current Screen” on page 44and “Current Screen Follows Encoder Mode” onpage 44 make life easier when you are working withthe encoders.Flipping the encodersThe FLIP key exchanges the functions of the fadersand the encoders, allowing the touch-sensitive fadersto be used for automating tasks that might otherwisebe performed by the encoders. When this key is pressed, the faders automaticallymove to reflect the new values assigned to them.TIPWhen setting up a cue mix on aux sends 1 and 2, forexample, you can use the faders for this, while stillkeeping an eye on the main level settings (on theencoders).Figure 2.12: Encoder functionsFigure 2.13: Setting the encoder mode
