133. Installation3.1 System RequirementsPC: Minimum requirements: Pentium200 MHz (or equivalent) processorrunning Windows 98 (Second orMillennium Edition), Windows 2000 orWindows XP, 96MB RAM.Recommended: Pentium II 300MHzprocessor with 128MB RAM or better.(These requirements are for use withCubasis VST. Other applications willhave different requirements. Consultyour application's manufacturer forfurther information.)NOTE: The US-428 is not supportedunder Windows 95. We also do notrecommend Windows98 First Edition, due to its limited USB implementation. Afast EIDE hard disk is required forthroughput of multiple audio tracks.96MB RAM is the minimumrecommended, but with all digital audioprograms, you’ll have better results withmore RAM. An SVGA graphics card issuggested (min. 256 colors, 800x600resolution or better).Although this product has been checkedfor use with standard configurationcomputers which meet the specificationsabove, we cannot guarantee theoperation of the product, even withcomputers meeting the specifications, due to differences in architecture andimplementation between computers.Chipsets are also a concern with USBaudio. We’ve found that the mostdependable motherboards are oneswhich utilize Intel-based chipsets. Youcan determine your chipset by going intothe Device Manager. On the Windows98 desktop, right click on My Computer, and select Properties. Click on theDevice Manager tab, and then click onthe plus (+) sign next to Universal SerialBus Controllers. (see illustration 3.01)The following chipsets have beensuccessfully run with the US-428: Intel 82371 AB/EB PCI to USBUniversal Host Controller Intel 82371 SB PCI to USBUniversal Host Controller Intel 82801 AA PCI to USBUniversal Host Controller ALi PCI to USB Open HostControllerSome other chipsets, notably thosespecifying Open Host Controllers orOHCI (rather than Universal HostControllers or UHCI), have been subjectto occasional incompatibilities. Whilemost OHCI systems have no problemswith the US-428, occasionally someolder OHCI systems will exhibitproblems. We have found that, in themajority of these cases, a PCI-basedUSB card utilizing an Opti-chip controllerwill work dependably. These cards (alsoavailable in PCMCIA format for laptops)are available through a number ofmanufacturers. Please consult theTASCAM website for further information.
