16UBI EasyCoder 101 – Technical ManualAt startup, the behaviour of the printer is decided by the possibleexistence of a startup (autoexec) file, i.e. a program that automati-cally starts running when the printer is turned on. There are fivemajor possibilities:A The printer is fitted with the EasyPak Startup program, whichallows the operator to switch between UBI LabelShop and UBIWindows Driver.B The printer is fitted with the UBI Shell file-managing program, which allows the operator to choose between a variety ofapplications and functions.C The printer is fitted with the UBI Stand-Alone program.D The printer is fitted with no startup file at all.E The printer is fitted with a custom-made application programthat is design to perform a specific task, e.g. to print airline ticket, baggage tags, or product labels for a certain company. There can be one startup file stored in each of the following parts ofthe printer's memory: RAM, ROM, and memory cards. If there arestartup files stored in more than one place, they will be used with thefollowing priority:1. Dos-formatted memory cards (SRAM).2. Printer's RAM memory.3. Non DOS-formatted memory cards (SRAM or OTPROM).4. Printer's ROM memory, e.g. the configuration EPROM's.This implies that if you have a startup file stored in the configu-ration EPROM's and insert a memory card with another startupfile before you turn on the printer, the startup file of the memorycard will be used. The display will keep you informed on what happens and in manycases prompt you to take some kind of action, e.g. to choosebetween options. How to take action largely depends on the numberof keys available on the printer model in question.Do not start the printer before you have made the necessaryconnections, inserted any memory card you want to use, andchecked that the printhead is lowered and the optional cutter is inclosed position.Turn on the power by means of the main switch on the rear plate. The “Power” LED control lamp on the front panel lights up whenthe power is on. Wait for a few moments, while the printer loads theprogram and runs some self-diagnostic tests. Then some kind ofmessage will appear in the display window.STARTING UPStartup FilesTurning On the PrinterEPROM = Erasable ProgrammableRead-Only MemoryOTPROM = One-TimeProgrammable Read-Only MemoryRAM = Random Access MemoryROM = Read-Only MemorySRAM = Static Random AccessMemory
