Operator Guide 4- 3Maintaining the systemConditioning paperBecause temperature and humidity affect paper performance inthe printer, you need to condition paper before using it. Tocondition paper, store it for a specified length of time in the sametype of environment as your printer. The length of time you should condition your paper depends onthe amount of paper and the difference between the storage andoperating temperatures.Use the following chart to determine the number of hours neededto condition stacked cartons of paper.NOTE: The numbers in the top two rows indicate the temperaturedifference between the storage area and the operatingenvironment, not actual room temperatures.Table 4-1 Temperature and hours needed to condition paperExample: If you want to move ten cartons of paper from a storagearea with a temperature of 90o F to an operating area with atemperature of 70 o F (a 20 o difference), you should do so at least18 hours before using the paper.Paper curlBefore the manufacturer cuts paper into sheets, it is stored onlarge rolls. After it is cut and packaged, it retains some of the curlfrom the rollers.Although it is unnecessary to load paper with the curl facing up ordown, best results occur when you are consistent. For example, ifyou open paper with the wrapper seam up, always load it in thetray that way.Temperature difference between storage and operating areasFahrenheit10o 15o 20o 25o 30o 40o 50oCentigrade5.5o 8.5o 11o 13o 17o 22o 28oCartons Hours needed to condition the paper1 4 8 11 14 17 24 345 5 9 12 15 18 25 3510 8 14 18 22 27 38 5120 11 16 23 28 35 48 6740 14 19 26 32 38 54 75
