5 M ANAGING THE PS HUBThis chapter contains the following topics:n The management tasks you can performn What you can use to manage your stackn How you can make a management connection to your stackIntroduction Network management is not required to make the PS Hub work, butallows you to change the way it works and to monitor what ishappening to the segments and the rest of the network. There aremany features that can improve the operation of the hub or stack.A stack of PS Hubs is treated as a single manageable entity, and themanagement is distributed. This guide uses the word ‘stack’ to refer toa stack of one or more PS Hubs, and ‘management station’ to referto the piece of equipment you are using to manage the stack (forexample a computer). If the stack is connected and configured as recommended, the bottomhub in the stack is unit number 1, the next hub up is unit number 2,and so on.All PS Hubs must be running agent software version 2.00 or later forthem to have the functionality mentioned in this user guide (forexample the web interface, CLI and load balancing). However, PS Hubsthat are running earlier agent software are compatible with newerPS Hubs but do not have the newer functionality. You can use Quick Configuration Manager to see what versions ofmanagement software are on the units in the stack, and to upgradethe stack; refer to “Upgrading a Stack” on page B-28.
