DUA1640-5AAA02Methods of Management 5-7IP Addresses If you are uncertain about what IP addresses to assign your equipment, contact your network administrator. To operate correctly, each device on your network (for example a hubor management station) must have a unique IP address (if one isconfigured). IP addresses have the format n.n.n.n where n is a decimalnumber between 0 and 255. An example IP address is ‘191.1.1.8’.The IP address can be split into two parts:n The first part (‘191.1’ in the example) identifies the network onwhich the device resides.n The second part (‘1.8’ in the example) identifies the device withinthe network. If your network is internal to your organization only, you may use anyarbitrary IP address. We suggest you use addresses in the series191.1.1.X where X is a number between 1 and 254. Use the defaultSLIP address of 192.168.101.1.If your network has a connection to the external IP network, you mustapply for a registered IP address. This system ensures that every IPaddress used is unique; if you do not have a registered IP address, youmay be using an identical address to someone else and your networkwill not operate correctly.Obtaining a Registered IP AddressInterNIC Registration Services is the organization responsible forsupplying registered IP addresses.
