Chapter 3. First-Time RAID Configuration Using 3BM28 3ware Serial ATA RAID Controller User GuideSpecifying a Hot SpareYou can designate one of the Available Drives as a hot spare in 3BM. If a hotspare is specified and a redundant unit degrades, an event notification will begenerated. The hot spare will automatically replace the failed drive withoutuser intervention. To specify a hot spare1 In the list of Available Drives, highlight the drive to use.2 Type s to specify that the selected drive will be the hot spare. You’ll see the words “Hot Spare” appear next to the drive in the AvailableDrives list.Figure 17. Hot Spare IndicatedIf a hot spare is already enabled, you can disable it by following the sameprocess.Leaving Individual Drives as JBODsBy default, if you leave individual drives unconfigured (JBODs), they will notbe available to the operating system. If you want to be able to use individualdrives, configure them as single-disk units. If you have JBODs attached to an 8000 controller that you want to use withthe 9000 controller, see “Moving Units from an 8000 Controller to a 9000Controller” on page 126.Note: In order to replace a failed drive in a degraded unit, a hot spare drivemust have the same or larger storage capacity than the failed drive.
