CyberMONITOR User’s GuideA-1A Glossary10BASE-T — IEEE 802.3 standard for the use of Ethernet LAN technology over UnshieldedTwisted Pair wiring, running at 10 Mbps.AIS — DS-1 Line Status Error condition - The Alarm Indication Signal Failure is declared whenan AIS defect is detected at the input, and the AIS defect still exists after the Loss of Frame failure, which is caused by the unframed nature of the “all-ones” signal. The AIS failure is cleared whenthe Loss of Frame failure is cleared.ARP — Address Resolution Protocol. An Internet protocol used to bind an IP address to Ethernet/802.3 addresses.ASCII — American Standard Code for Information Interchange. It is an 8-bit code for characterrepresentation.AUI — Attachment Unit Interface. An IEEE 802.3 transceiver cable connecting the networkdevice (such as a router) to the MAU (media access unit).Bandwidth on Demand — Feature providing the capability of adjusting the bandwidth (openingor closing multiple B channels) when the load in traffic increases or decreases.Bridge — A device that segments network traffic. A bridge maintains a list of each node on thesegment and only traffic destined for a node on the adjacent segment is passed across the bridge. Abridge operates at Layer 2 of the OSI reference model.B Channel — In ISDN, a full-duplex, 64 Kbps channel used for sending user data. Also knownas a “Clear Channel”. Some B channels only achieve 56 Kbps due to in-band signaling which usessome of the available bandwidth.BESs — Bursty Errored Seconds - a DS-1 Line Status Error condition. A second with fewer than320 and more than one Path Coding Violation error events, no SEFSs (Severely Errored FramingSeconds), and no detected incoming Alarm Indication Signal defects.BRI — Basic Rate Interface. The ISDN interface providing two 64 Kbps B channels for voice, data and video transmission and one 16 Kbps D channel for signaling and data transmission.
