Installing SCSI Hard-Disk Drives 6-3Removing and Installing a SCSI Hard-Disk DriveThe following subsections describe how to remove orinstall SCSI hard-disk drive carriers in the computer’sinternal drive bays.Removing a SCSI Hard-Disk DriveRemove a SCSI hard-disk drive from an internal drivebay as follows:1. If a PowerEdge Expandable RAID Controllerhost adapter card is not installed in the system, turn off the system.2. Release the carrier by pulling down the plasticdrive handle. Slide the carrier toward you until itis free of the drive bay.Installing a SCSI Hard-Disk DriveInstall a SCSI hard-disk drive in an internal drive bay asfollows:1. If a PowerEdge Expandable RAID Controllerhost adapter card is not installed in the computer, turn off the system.2. Position the drive with its carrier side down andinsert it, connector end first, into the bay (see Fig-ure 6-2).3. Holding the drive carrier by its sides, slide thedrive into the bay.4. When the pins on the drive-carrier handle con-tact the drive bay, lift the handle to draw thedrive carrier into the bay and lock the drive inplace.5. Install any required SCSI device drivers.See Chapter 3, “Installing and Configuring SCSIDrivers,” for information.6. Test the SCSI devices.Run the SCSI Devices Test Group in the systemdiagnostics. See Chapter 5, “Running the SystemDiagnostics,” in the Installation and Troubleshoot-ing Guide for information.Figure 6-2. Installing a SCSI Hard-Disk DriveRemoving and Installing a SCSI Hard-Disk Drive With the System RunningIf the PowerEdge 4200 system has a PowerEdge Expand-able RAID Controller host adapter card installed andconnected to the SCSI backplane board, you can remove andinsert SCSI hard-disk drives while the system is running. Before attempting to remove or insert a drive while thesystem is running, see the documentation for the Power-Edge Expandable RAID Controller host adapter card toensure that the host adapter is configured correctly tosupport drive removal and insertion.SCSI Hard-Disk Drive Indicator PatternsThe three light-emitting diode (LED) indicators adjacentto each of the six SCSI hard-disk drive bays provideinformation on the status of the SCSI hard-disk drives. The SCSI backplane board firmware controls the driveonline and drive failure indicators, while the drive activ-ity indicator is usually controlled by the drive itself.CAUTION: Removing and installing SCSI hard-disk drives with the system running is notsupported for systems without a PowerEdge Expand-able RAID Controller host adapter card. Removing adrive in this situation will result in a loss of data.handlepins (2)
