C-2 Dell PowerEdge 4200 Systems User’s Guideto the sectors containing these files. With software suchas the Norton Utilities, Mace Utilities, or PC-ToolsDeluxe, the data stored in these areas can often berestored, meaning that you can recover most, if not all, ofthe data.Unlike using the format command on a hard-disk drive, using format on a diskette completely erases all the dataon the diskette unless you use the diskette format pro-gram included in the Mace Utilities. For a complete description of data recovery proceduresand the software needed to perform them, see The PaulMace Guide to Data Recovery, published by Brady.Cleaning System ComponentsAn exhaust fan in the power supply cools the power sup-ply and computer by drawing air in through variousopenings in the computer and blowing it out the back. However, the fan also draws dust and other particles intothe computer, causing contaminant buildup, which resultsin an increase in the system’s internal temperature andinterferes with the operation of various systemcomponents. To avoid these conditions, Dell recommends keepingyour work environment clean to reduce the amount ofdust and dirt around the computer, thereby reducing theamount of contaminants drawn into the computer by thepower supply fan. In particular, you should keep the exte-rior of your computer and monitor clean, and you shoulduse a commercially available diskette-drive head-cleaning kit to remove contaminants inside your diskettedrives.Recommended Tools and AccessoriesDell recommends that you use the following tools andaccessories when you clean the computer:• A wrist grounding strap — The proper use of a wristgrounding strap reduces the effect of electrostaticdischarge (ESD), which can damage certain com-puter components. To use a wrist grounding strap, place the strap around your wrist and attach the otherend of the strap to an unpainted metal surface in thechassis, such as the power supply bracket, that isconnected to chassis ground.• A liquid dishwashing detergent — Use a mixture ofone part liquid dishwashing detergent and three partswater to clean the exterior of the computer, monitor, and keyboard. You can also add fabric softener toproduce an antistatic solution that prevents dust frombeing attracted to the monitor screen.• A soft, lint-free cleaning cloth — Moisten the clean-ing cloth with the dishwashing detergent solution toclean the exterior of the computer system.• A nonabrasive diskette-drive head-cleaning kit —Dell recommends that you use a kit that contains pre-treated diskettes in individually sealed packages. These kits ensure that the cleaning solution isapplied evenly over the entire diskette-drive headsurface, and they prevent contamination of the headsby exposure to foreign substances.• A small vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment —Use the vacuum cleaner to remove dust and dirt fromthe exterior of the computer and keyboard.Cleaning the Computer, Monitor, andKeyboard ExteriorsA conventional monitor or keyboard cover minimizes theaccumulation of dust and other debris inside the monitorand keyboard when they are not in use. Also, commer-cially available keyboard membrane covers make itpossible to use the keyboard while providing protectionagainst foreign particles. However, regardless of any protective covers, the moni-tor and keyboard must be cleaned occasionally. To cleanthe exterior of the computer, monitor, and keyboard, fol-low these steps:1. Turn off the computer, monitor, and any otherattached peripherals, and disconnect them fromtheir power sources.2. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove any dust fromthe slots and holes on the computer and betweenthe keys on the keyboard.3. Moisten a soft cleaning cloth with a solution ofthree parts water and one part liquid dishwash-ing detergent.Do not soak the cloth in the solution; you must notlet the solution drip inside the computer or keyboard.
