Installing System Board Options 8-5Table 8-1 lists some sample memory configurations.Performing a Memory UpgradeFollow this procedure to perform a memory upgrade:1. Remove the computer cover according to theinstructions in “Removing the Computer Cover”in Chapter 7.2. To access the DIMM sockets on the system board, rotate the power supply as described in “Rotatingthe Power Supply Away From the System Board”in Chapter 7.3. Determine the DIMM sockets into which you willinstall DIMMs or replace existing DIMMs.4. Install or replace DIMMs as necessary to reachthe desired memory total.Follow the instructions in “Installing a DIMM” or“Removing a DIMM,” as appropriate, found later inthis section.5. Rotate the power supply back into position, mak-ing sure the securing tab snaps into place.6. Replace the computer cover, reconnect your com-puter and peripherals to their power sources, andturn them on.After the system completes the power-on self-test(POST) routine, the system runs a memory test thatdisplays the total memory of all installed DIMMs,including those you just installed.NOTE: If the memory total is incorrect, turn off anddisconnect your computer and peripherals from theirpower sources. Remove the computer cover, rotatethe power supply, and make sure that the installedDIMMs are seated properly in their sockets. Thenrepeat steps 5 and 6.The system detects that the new memory does notmatch the existing system configuration informationand generates the following message:The amount of system memory haschanged.Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 torun the setup utility7. Press to enter the System Setup program, andcheck the System Memory category in the lower-rightcorner of Page 1.The system should have already changed the value inthe System Memory category to reflect the newlyinstalled memory. Verify the new total.NOTE: If the memory total is incorrect, turn off anddisconnect your computer and peripherals from theirpower sources. Remove the computer cover, rotatethe power supply, and check the installed DIMMs tomake sure that they are seated properly in their sock-ets. Then repeat steps 5, 6, and 7.8. When the System Memory total is correct, press the key to exit the System Setup program.9. Run the Dell Diagnostics to verify that theDIMMs are operating properly.See your Diagnostics and Troubleshooting Guide forinformation on running the diagnostics and trouble-shooting any problems that may occur.Installing a DIMMIf a DIMM is already installed in the socket you want touse, you must remove it. To do so, follow the instructionsin the next subsection, “Removing a DIMM.”Table 8-1.
