Installing Drives 9-1Chapter 9Installing DrivesYour Dell computer has five drive bays for installingthe following types of drives:• The user-accessible drive cage at the front of thecomputer consists of one 3.5-inch bay (dedicated toa 3.5-inch diskette drive) and two 5.25-inch drivebays that can hold up to two half-height, 5.25-inchdevices—typically tape drives or CD-ROM drives.• The two vertically positioned hard-disk drive bayscan each hold a 3.5-inch enhanced integrated driveelectronics (EIDE) or small computer system inter-face (SCSI) hard-disk drive. The bay on the right (asyou face the front of the computer) can hold a1-inch-high (or smaller) drive, whereas the bay onthe left accommodates a 1.6-inch-high (or smaller)drive. The next four sections contain information that you willneed in several of the installation procedures describedlater in the chapter. The remaining sections of this chap-ter cover installing each type of drive individually.NOTE: In all the following procedures, left and right referto your left and right as you face the front of the computer (seeFigure 9-1).Figure 9-1. Drive LocationsConfiguring Your DriveBecause you may need to tailor a drive to work with yoursystem, certain installation instructions in this chapterrefer you to the documentation that came with the drivefor information on enabling termination or changingjumpers or switches.Drives installed by Dell are configured to work with yoursystem. However, check the documentation that camewith any new drive to verify that the jumpers andswitches are set correctly for your particular configura-tion, and make any necessary alterations (see “Jumpers”and “Switches” in Appendix B).For example, when installing a second drive on an EIDEchannel, you must ensure that it is configured for theCable Select jumper setting so that it will operate prop-erly with the other EIDE drive on the channel.three-bay drive cagefront of computerinternal hard-diskdrive bays
