9-2 Dell Workstation Midsize Systems User’s GuideRemoving and ReplacingFront-Panel InsertsEmpty drive bays contain a front-panel insert to protectthe inside of the computer from dust particles and to alsoensure proper airflow within the computer. Before youinstall a drive in an empty drive bay, you must firstremove the front-panel insert.To remove a front-panel insert for a 5.25-inch bay, followthese steps:1. Turn off the system, including any attachedperipherals, and disconnect all the alternatingcurrent (AC) power cables from their powersources.2. Remove the computer cover as instructed in“Removing the Computer Cover” in Chapter 7.3. Lay the computer cover upside down on a flatwork surface, with the front of the cover facingtoward you.4. With your thumbs, press in against each end ofthe insert at about the midpoint until it snaps freeof the cover (see Figure 9-2).Figure 9-2. Removing a Front-Panel InsertTo remove the insert covering the 3.5-inch bay at the topof the drive cage, follow these steps:1. Complete steps 1 through 3 of the procedure forremoving a 5.25-inch insert.2. Inside the cover, locate the spring-loaded backend of the eject button mechanism for the3.5-inch bay. Press the mechanism toward thefront panel to snap the plastic insert out of itsopening.To replace a front-panel insert for a 5.25-inch bay: Frominside the cover, position the insert behind the bay open-ing, insert the two ring-tabs (one on each end of theinsert) over the posts on the inside of the opening, andcarefully press both ends of the insert into place (see Fig-ure 9-2).To replace the front-panel insert for the 3.5-inch bay:From outside the cover, place the insert in position andpress it into the opening.Connecting DrivesWhen installing a diskette drive, tape drive, CD-ROMdrive, or hard-disk drive, you connect two cables—adirect current (DC) power cable and an interface cable—to the back of the drive. Your drive’s power input connec-tor (to which you connect the DC power cable) resemblesthe connector shown in Figure 9-3.Figure 9-3.
