Installing Drives 9-98. Connect a DC power cable to the controller card.If none of the DC power cables from the power sup-ply can reach the controller card, connect one end ofan optional Y-shaped power cable extension to oneof the DC power cables from the power supply (seeFigure 9-8). Connect another end of the Y-shapedpower cable extension to the power input connectoron the controller card.Figure 9-8. Connecting the Y-Shaped PowerCable ExtensionCheck all cable connections. Fold cables out of theway to provide airflow for the fan and cooling vents.9. Replace the computer cover.10. Connect the tape drive’s external interface cableto the tape-drive port connector on the back ofthe controller card, and tighten the screws on theconnectors.11. Reconnect your computer and peripherals totheir power sources, and turn them on.12. Install and test the tape drive software asinstructed in the software documentation thatcame with the tape drive.Installing an EIDE Hard-Disk DriveThis section includes information on installing, partition-ing, and formatting EIDE hard-disk drives. Forinstructions on installing a SCSI hard-disk drive, see“Installing SCSI Devices” found later in this chapter. Forinformation on partitioning and formatting a SCSI hard-disk drive, refer to the documentation that came with theSCSI software drivers and your operating system.Up to two EIDE drives (one of which must be 1 inch highor less) can be installed in the hard-disk drive bracket tothe left of the drive cage. The first EIDE drive is installedin the left (1.6-inch) drive bracket bay; a second drive isinstalled in the 1-inch bay of the bracket.Installing an EIDE Hard-Disk Drive in theHard-Disk Drive BracketInstall an EIDE hard-disk drive in the hard-disk drivebracket as follows:1. If you are replacing a hard-disk drive that con-tains data you want to keep, be sure to make abackup of your files before you begin thisprocedure.2. Unpack the hard-disk drive and prepare it forinstallation.Check the documentation that accompanied the driveto verify that it is configured for your computersystem. Configure the drive for the Cable Selectjumper setting so that it will be assigned master orslave status appropriately (for a detailed explanationof Cable Select, see “EIDE Drive Addressing” foundearlier in this chapter).3. Remove the computer cover as instructed in“Removing the Computer Cover” in Chapter 7.4. Remove the drive bracket from the chassis. If a hard-disk drive is already installed in the drivebracket, disconnect the DC power cable and EIDEcable from the drive.DC power cable frompower supplyattach one of theseconnectors to controller cardY-shaped powercable extensionCAUTION: When you unpack the drive, donot set it on a hard surface, which may damagethe drive. Instead, set the drive on a surfacewith sufficient cushion, such as a foam pad.CAUTION: See “Protecting Against Electro-static Discharge” in the safety instructions atthe front of this guide.
