31Installation3.7 Gas-sensitive electrodeImportant Note: Before using the AMTAX sc for the first time, theelectrode has to be filled with the supplied electrolyte, seesection 3.7.1.1.The ammonium in the sample is converted into (dissolved)ammonia gas by adding sodium hydroxide solution. This dissolvedammonia gas content will be converted into a measurable pH shiftin the electrode.3.7.1 Installation of the electrode and electrolyteThe electrode body and the glass electrode are sold as a unit(Refer to section 8.4, page 66). Use the electrode only in thesupplied enclosure. To prevent inaccurate readings or instrumentmalfunction, do not use a different enclosure than that supplied bythe manufacturer.3.7.1.1 Fill the electrode with electrolyteCAUTIONReview all SDS/MSDS information and use recommendedsafety measures to prevent exposure to potential chemicalhazards.Important Note: Never lubricate the membrane cap or theelectrode with grease, silicone oil or Vaseline. This will causedamage to the Teflon membrane which will cause poorperformance.Pre-requisites:• The items required to fill the electrode are located in the bagattached to the base of the enclosure.• Before the electrolyte can be added to the electrode, open theinstrument enclosure and disconnect the electrode cable fromthe analyzer panel.
