12SURFACE C OOKINGSurface ControlsUse to turn on the surface elements. An infinite choice ofheat settings is available from Low to High. The knobs canbe set on or between any of the settings.Medium (5): Use tomaintain slow boil forlarge amounts of liquidsand for most fryingoperations.BEFORE COOKING• Always place a pan on the surface unit before you turn iton. To prevent damage to range, never operate surfaceunit without a pan in place.• NEVER use the cooktop as a storage area for food orcookware.DURING COOKING• Be sure you know which knob controls which surfaceunit. Make sure you turned on the correct surface unit.• Begin cooking on a higher heat setting then reduce to alower setting to complete the operation. Never use ahigh heat setting for extended cooking.• NEVER allow a pan to boil dry. This could damage thepan and the appliance.• NEVER touch cooktop until it has cooled. Expect someparts of the cooktop, especially around the surface units,to become warm or hot during cooking. Use potholdersto protect hands.CAUTIONSuggested Heat SettingsThe size, type of cookware and cooking operation will affectthe heat setting.AFTER COOKING• Make sure surface unit is turned off.• Clean up messy spills as soon as possible.OTHER TIPS• If cabinet storage is provided directly above cookingsurface, limit it to items that are infrequently used andcan be safely stored in an area subjected to heat.Temperatures may be unsafe for items such as volatileliquids, cleaners or aerosol sprays.• NEVER leave any items, especially plastic items, on thecooktop. The hot air from the vent may ignite flammableitems, melt or soften plastics, or increase pressure inclosed containers, causing them to burst.• NEVER allow aluminum foil, meat probes or any othermetal object, other than a pan on a surface element, tocontact heating elements.• NEVER store heavy items above the cooktop that could falland damage it.Low (1): Use to keep foodswarm and melt chocolateand butter.High (9): Use to bringliquid to a boil. Alwaysreduce setting to a lowerheat when liquids begin toboil or foods begin to cook.Med. Low (3):Use tocontinuecookingcovered foodsor steam foods.Med. High (7): Use tobrown meat, heat oil fordeep fat frying orsauteing. Maintain fastboil for large amountsof liquids.Setting the Controls1. Place pan on surface element.2. Push in and turn the knob in either direction to the desiredheat setting.• The control panel is marked to identify whichelement the knob controls. For example, thegraphic at right indicates right front element.3. There is an element indicator light on the control panel.When any surface control knob is turned on, the light willturn on. The light will turn off when all the surfaceelements are turned off.When a control is turned on, a glow can be seen throughthe smoothtop surface. The element will cycle on and offto maintain the preset heat setting, even on High.4. After cooking, turn knob to OFF. Remove pan.Setting the controls for grilling:Knob A - Exhaust fan only.
