(1) AntennaCaution:Protect your equipment—Use a LIGHTNING AR-RESTER.The type of antenna that is used will greatly affectthe performance of the transceiver. Use a properlyadjusted antenna, of good quality, to enable yourtransceiver to perform at its best. The antenna inputimpedance is 50 ohms. Use 50-ohm coaxial cablesuch as 5D-2V for this connection. If the antenna isfar from the transceiver the use of low loss coaxialcable, such as 5D-2V is recommended. Match theimpedance of the coaxial cable and that of the anten-na so that the SWR is less than 1.5 to 1. The protec-tion circuit in the transceiver will activate if the SWRis particularly poor (greater than 3 to 1). High SWRvalue will cause transmitter output to drop, and maylead to TVI or BCI reports.(2) GroundingCaution:Never use a gas pipe or electrical conduit pipe.Notes:1. A ground connection that is a 1/4 wavelength orits multiple may provide a good DC ground, but itwill not provide a good RF ground.2. A city water pipe cannot be used as a good earthin some cases.Making a good earth connection is important forpreventing dangers such as electric shock and foremitting a high quality signal with minimum spuriousradiation. Bury a commercially available ground rodor copper plate under the ground and connect it tothe GND terminal. A thick wire, cut as short as possi-ble, should be used for the connection. To make agood earth connection, connect the GND terminal toa grounded metal water pipe.(3) External speakerTheTS-140S/680Sincludesabuilt-inspeaker.Ifyouwouldliketouseanexternalspeaker,suchastheSP-430,itmaybeconnectedtotheEXTSPjackontherearoftheradio.Thespeakermaybeanygood8ohmpermanentmagnettypespeaker.Thediametershouldbeatleast4inchesforgoodaudioquality.IfyouplanonusingaspeakerotherthantheSP-430itshouldbeequippedwithaminiaturephonejackplug.Theinternalspeakerisdisabledwhentheexternalspeakerplugisinsertedintothereceptacle.(4) Key connectionYour keyshouldbeconnectedas illustratedinthefigurebelow.Whenusinganelectronic keyer, makesure thatpolarityisset forpositive.Alwaysuseshieldedlinefromthekeytotransceiver.Before connecting, check that thepolarity is correct. Front PanelMicrophones(1) HeadphonesAny low-impedance (4~ 16 ohms) headphones maybe used with the transceiver. Connect the head-phones to the front panel phone jack. The optional HS-5 or HS-6 headphones are bestsuited for use with the transceiver. Stereo typeheadphones can also be used.(2) MicrophonesAny microphone with an impedance between 500and 50 kQ may be used with this transceiver. The KENWOOD microphones MC-43S (handheld),MC-60A, MC-80, MC-85 (table-top type) arerecommended. You can switch send/receive by voice if a voice con-troller is connected. (TS-680S only)(3) Voice Controller (TS-680S only)We recommend the use of VOX-4.Simply connect the MIC cable to the MIC jack.7
