Adding Clients & New SoftwareManaging & Updating Images Located at Multiple Remote Sites 141Managing & Updating Images Located at Multiple Remote SitesNeoware Image Manager servers are usually located on the sameLAN as the clients that mount the virtual volumes. If you have sev-eral servers at different locations (at different branches for example),you may require a mirrored copy of the same image at each location. In this case the original mirrored copies of the image can be createdat each location using a DVD-based or HD-based copy of the origi-nal Master image. When an administrator wants to update an image that is mirrored onmultiple remote Image Manager servers, it is not usually convenientto copy the complete updated image to each remote site over WAN.A more efficient way of updating remote images can be achieved byusing scripts to activate the various image management tools thatNeoware Image Manager provides. In particular, the tool nvddadmincan be used. Refer to the chapter “NVDD Server Administration” onpage 241 for details. The functions performed by the scripts could be as follows:On the Master server (the server based at the Administrator facili-ties that contains the Master copy of the image):1 Configure the NVDD server so that the image to be updated willbe mounted in CVolwrite/Normal mode by the client to be usedto update the image (Client-A).2 Boot Client-A off the image and update it (run security patches, hotfixes, install or remove applications, change settings, etc.).3 When the image works on Client-A as required, shut down Cli-ent-A.4 Run CVolCompactor to reduce the size of the CVol file.5 Compress the CVol file (using gzip, WinZip, etc.).6 Copy the compressed CVol file to each of the remote NVDDservers containing the same image to be updated. (You can usethe nvddadmin tool to do this.)
