9-8Driving and operatingCatalytic converterControlling exhaust emissionThe catalytic converter reduces to aminimum the proportion of noxiousmaterials in the exhaust, such ascarbon monoxide (CO),hydrocarbons (CH) and nitrogenoxides (NO x ).Leaded fuel will damage the catalyticconverter and parts of the electronicsystem, thereby rendering theminoperative. If the engine misfires or runsroughly after a cold start, theengine power has reducedsignificantly or other unusualoperating problems occur thatindicate a fault in the ignitionsystem, seek the assistance of aworkshop as quickly as possible.Drive at a slower speed and withless engine revs for a short time, ifnecessary. If unburned fuel enters the catalyticconverter, this may result inoverheating and irreparabledamage to the catalytic converter. You should therefore avoidfrequent cold starts, unnecessarilylong use of the starter when settingoff, running the tank dry (anirregular fuel supply leads tooverheating) and starting theengine by pushing or towing. If the control indicator for exhaustemissions Z illuminates whilstdriving, seek the assistance of aworkshop immediately.
