9-10Driving and operatingBrake assistRapid powerful application of thebrake pedal automatically appliesmaximum brake force amplification toachieve the shortest possible brakingdistance under full braking (brakeassist).Maintain steady pressure on thebrake pedal for as long as full-onbraking is to continue. When thebrake pedal is released, themaximum brake force amplification istaken away.Ride control systemsElectronic Stability Program(ESP®) 3The Electronic Stability Programimproves driving stability whennecessary, independently of the typeof road surface and the tyre grip. Italso prevents the drive wheels fromspinning. The system monitors vehiclemovements. As soon as the vehiclestarts to swerve (understeers/oversteers), engine output is reduced(the sound of the engine changes)and individual wheels are specificallybraked. This considerably improvesthe driving stability of the vehicle onsnow and ice and on wet or slipperyroad surfaces.ESP® is ready for operation as soonas the ignition is switched on and thecontrol indicators R, ESP andTCSS OFF extinguish. When the ESP® comes into action, control indicator R flashes rapidly inthe instrument cluster. Some noise orvibration may be apparent.ESP active control indicator 3 5-10.Interruption of power supplyIf the vehicle’s battery has beendisconnected and reconnected,ESP® is deactivated and controlindicator R flashes once per second.Reactivate ESP ® by driving in astraight line at over 9 mph ( 15 km/h)for a few seconds until flashingceases. Several seconds may lapsebefore the control indicatorextinguishes, depending on roadconditions.CautionDo not let this special safety featuretempt you into taking risks whendriving.Traffic safety can only be achievedby adopting a responsible drivingstyle.
