H37i Operating Instructions37CAUTIONAn operator presence switch (seat switch)will cause the engine to stop if the parkingbrake is in the DISENGAGED position and/or the FSC is out of the NEUTRAL-PARKposition (tractor stationary or moving for-ward) and the operator is not in the seat. The function of this switch should bechecked by the operator raising off theseat, first with the parking brake DISEN-GAGED, and then with the tractor movingforward (allow 1/2 second “off the seat” forthe time delay function); the engine shouldstop. In each case, if the safety system isnot working, it should be repaired or re-placed before operating the mower. DONOT disconnect the safety switches; theyare for the operator’s protection.NOTE: If the FSC lever will not stay in theselected position, the friction lock needs to beadjusted. Refer to Adjustments for Transmis-sion Control Step 7 - Forward Speed ControlFriction Adjustment on page 73.2. Steer by pulling the lever on the side of de-sired direction of turn, e.g., pull the LH lever toturn left. To minimize the possibility of over-control, use only one hand on both steeringlevers.Keep Feet OnFootrest WhenMovingPull SteeringLevers WithLeft HandForward Speed Control(FSC)Correct Operator Hand Positionon the Controls3.GETTING STARTED RECOMMENDATIONS:♦ Learn operation of the mower in anopen area away from buildings, fenc-es, and obstructions. Learn opera-tion on flat ground BEFORE operat-ing on slopes.♦ Start maneuvering the mower withSLOW engine speed and SLOW For-ward Speed Control setting until fa-miliar with all operating characteris-tics.♦ Remember it is not necessary to holdthe steering levers forward (a uniqueWalker feature); always PULL on thelevers for steering or for reverse mo-tion of the mower.♦ Learn to operate the mower with yourleft hand on the steering levers andright hand on Forward Speed Con-trol. The use of two hands on thesteering levers tends to cause over-control.♦ Learn to operate the steering leverswith smooth action. Jerky move-ments are hard on the transmissionand lawn. For sharp turns, do not al-low the inside wheel to stop and twiston the grass. Pull the steering levercontrolling the inside wheel into re-verse for a smooth “rolling” turn (onewheel rolling forward while the otherrolls backward).♦ Practice maneuvering the mower un-til you can make it go exactly whereyou are aiming.♦ Remember, for an emergency stop,or in case of loss of control, machinemovement can always be stoppedquickly by pulling the Forward SpeedControl into the NEUTRAL-PARK po-sition.Reverse direction of the mower by pulling bothlevers backward.NOTE: Smooth action on the steering leverswill produce smooth mower operation.Remem ber to keep the engine and groundspeed slow until learning the control response.
