Maintenance Instructions H37iCleaning54Inspect the primary filter element after every 100hours of service and replace the element andsafety filter yearly (or when dirty or damaged).More frequent replacement may be required whenoperating in extremely dusty conditions. Servicethe air cleaner as follows:1. Release the top and bottom cover latches andremove the air cleaner cover. Wash the coverand dust ejection valve. Check that thesecomponents are in good condition. The dustejection valve is subject to wear and deteriora-tion and should be inspected carefully andreplaced yearly or when damaged. The lips ofthe valve should close and fit together; anycracks, deformation, or wear in the valve iscause for replacement.2. Remove the primary filter element by pulling itout of the canister. There will be some initialresistance as the filter seal breaks loose andslides off of the outlet tube. Gently move theend of the filter up and down and side to sideor twist to loosen the seal. Use gentle actionto minimize the amount of dust dislodged asthe filter is removed.3. Clean the filter element by GENTLY tappingon a flat, hard surface.NOTE: Use care when cleaning the filterelement. The filter element and/or seal sur-face may be damaged by tapping too hard orhitting on an uneven surface or sharp edge.Washing the paper element in water or clean-ing solution is not recommended. Do not tryto clean the element with compressed air. Donot oil the paper element. Remember, replac-ing a filter is less expensive than replacing adusted engine.4. Use a bright light inside the filter element toinspect for damage. Check the element verycarefully for pin holes or other damage thatwill allow dirt to leak through the paper media.Replace filter element if dirty or damaged.5. Check the condition and resilience of the radialsealing surface (inside of the open end) of theprimary filter element. Replace the filter if anycracks, tears, or other damage to the sealingsurface are noted.6. Without removing, visually inspect the condi-tion of the safety filter for damage or holes. The safety filter should only be removed foryearly replacement (or when dirty or dam-aged).IMPORTANT: Prior to removing the safetyfilter, make sure the inside surface of the aircleaner canister is clean. This will minimizethe risk of dirt entering the outlet tube whichcan cause premature engine wear.7. After removing the safety filter, use a clean, damp cloth and wipe the interior of the aircleaner canister clean. Use special care toclean both the inside and outside surfacesof the outlet tube.IMPORTANT: Any dust left on the inside ofthe outlet tube will go into the engine andcause wear.8. Check the outside surface of the outlet tubefor smoothness and cleanness (this is thesealing surface).9. Insert and seat the safety filter and primaryfilter el ement carefully into the canister, apply-ing pressure at the outer rim of the filter; not atthe flexible center. Make sure the filter ele-ment is completely in place before installingthe cover.IMPORTANT: DO NOT use the cover latch-es to force the filter into the canister–the covershould fit on with no extra force.NOTE: DO NOT use petroleum based lubri-cants on the sealing surfaces of the filter ele-ments; use talcum powder or dry siliconelubricants if required for filter installation.CanisterPrimaryFilter ElementSafety FilterRadial SealingSurfaceOutlet TubeAir Filter Element Replacement |
