General Configuration Using Local Management126CSX400 and CSX400-DC User’s GuideIPX Configuration Screen describes how to configure the CSX400 for IPX routing functions.WAN Setup describes how to configure the CSX400 for a Wide Area Network (WAN) interface.Local Management OverviewCabletron Systems Local Management is a management tool that allows a network manager toperform the following tasks:• Configure interconnected devices to form a network.• Monitor the performance of the network.• Control user access to the network and its components for the purpose of security.Management AgentThe management agent is a process within the CSX400 that collects information about theoperational performance of the managed network. Local Management communicates with themanagement agent for the purpose of issuing management commands to network devices.Local vs. Remote ManagementNetwork management applications are usually described as either local or remote managementapplications. A Local Management application resides within the circuits of the CSX400management agent and is accessible by making a TELNET connection through one of the twoEPIM ports located on the front panel of the device. Remote management applications such asCabletron Systems SPECTRUM, SPECTRUM Element Manager, or QuickSET run in anotherdevice that provides management services. This allows you to perform network management froma remote location.NOTEIf you have a WPIM-HDSL installed in your CSX400, refer to the WAN Setup section ofthis chapter for configuration information. For all other WPIMs, refer to your specificWPIM(s) Local Management Guide for information on this screen.
