Starting the EngineAutomatic TransmissionMove your shift lever to PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N).Your engine will not start in any other position — that isa safety feature. To restart when you are alreadymoving, use NEUTRAL (N) only.Notice: Do not try to shift to PARK (P) if yourvehicle is moving. If you do, you could damage thetransmission. Shift to PARK (P) only when yourvehicle is stopped.Manual TransmissionThe shift lever should be in NEUTRAL and the parkingbrake engaged. Hold the clutch pedal to the floor andstart the engine. Your vehicle will not start if the clutchpedal is not all the way down — that is a safety feature.1. With your foot off the accelerator pedal, turn yourignition key to START. Then, let go of the key; theengine will start automatically. The idle speedwill go down as your engine gets warm. Do not racethe engine immediately after starting it. Operatethe engine and transmission gently until theoil warms up and lubricates all moving parts.Your vehicle has a Computer-Controlled CrankingSystem. This feature assists in starting theengine and protects the electrical system. If theignition key is turned to the START position,and then released when the engine begins cranking,the engine will continue cranking until the vehiclestarts or until it exceeds the maximum cranking timeallowed, approximately 15 seconds to preventcranking motor damage. To prevent starter-motorgear damage, this system also prevents cranking ifthe engine is already running. The engine crankingcan be stopped by turning the ignition switch tothe ACCESSORY or OFF position.2. If your engine will not start, or starts but then stops,it could be flooded with too much gasoline. Trypushing your accelerator pedal all the way to thefloor and holding it there as you turn the keyto START. If the vehicle starts briefly but then stopsagain, do the same thing.Notice: Your engine is designed to work with theelectronics in your vehicle. If you add electricalparts or accessories, you could change the way theengine operates. Before adding electrical equipment,check with your dealer. If you do not, your enginemight not perform properly. Any resulting damagewould not be covered by your vehicle’s warranty.2-25
