INSTRUMENTS AND CONTROLS 127When the vehicle is started, thepassenger airbag status indicator willlight the symbol for on and off forseveral seconds as a system check.Then, after several more seconds, thestatus indicator will light either the onor off symbol to let you know thestatus of the front outboard passengerfrontal airbag and knee airbag.If the on symbol is lit on thepassenger airbag status indicator, itmeans that the front outboardpassenger frontal airbag and kneeairbag are allowed to inflate.If the off symbol is lit on the airbagstatus indicator, it means that thepassenger sensing system has turnedoff the front outboard passengerfrontal airbag and knee airbag.If, after several seconds, both statusindicator lights remain on, or if thereare no lights at all, there may be aproblem with the lights or thepassenger sensing system. It should go out whenthe engine is started. For vehicles witha reconfigurable cluster, this light maynot come on when the ignition isturned on.If the light stays on, or comes onwhile driving, there may be a problemwith the electrical charging system.Have it checked by your dealer.Driving while this light is on coulddrain the battery.When this light comes on, or isflashing, the Driver InformationCentre (DIC) also displays a message.If a short distance must be drivenwith the light on, be sure to turn offall accessories, such as the radio andair conditioner.Malfunction Indicator Lamp(Check Engine Light)This light is part of the vehicle'semission control on-board diagnosticsystem. If this light is on while theengine is running, a malfunction hasbeen detected and the vehicle mayrequire service.
