3-4 Dell PowerEdge 6100/200 System User’s Guidethe devices are allowed to start at the same time. Most devices require you to set a jumper before theycan respond to this command.NOTE: For many devices, if Send Start Unit Com-mand is set to Yes, the boot time will vary dependingon how long it takes each drive to start.Advanced Configuration Options Sub-menuThe advanced host adapter settings should not bechanged unless absolutely necessary. These values are setby Dell, and changing them may cause conflicts with theSCSI devices.• Host Adapter BIOS—This option enables or disablesthe host adapter BIOS. The default setting isEnabled.NOTE: Several SCSISelect options are not validunless the host adapter BIOS is enabled. If you are booting from a SCSI hard-disk drive con-nected to the host adapter, the BIOS must be enabled. You should disable the host adapter BIOS if theperipherals on the SCSI bus (for example, CD-ROMdrives) are all controlled by device drivers and do notneed the BIOS.• Support Removable Disks Under BIOS As FixedDisks—This option controls which removable-media drives are supported by the host adapterBIOS. The default setting is Boot Only. The follow-ing choices are available.— Boot Only. Only the removable-media drivedesignated as the boot device is treated as ahard-disk drive.— All Disks. All removable-media drives sup-ported by the BIOS are treated as hard-diskdrives.— Disabled. No removable-media drives aretreated as hard-disk drives. In this situation, software drivers are needed because the drivesare not controlled by the BIOS.• Extended BIOS Translation for DOSDrives > 1 GB—This option determines whetherextended translation is available for SCSI hard-diskdrives with capacities greater than 1 gigabyte (GB).The default setting is Enabled. The standard translation scheme for SCSI hostadapters provides a maximum accessible capacity of1 GB. To support hard-disk drives larger than 1 GB,the 78xx series host adapters include an extendedtranslation scheme that supports hard-disk drives aslarge as 8 GB under the MS-DOS® operating systemwith a maximum partition size of 2 GB.Extended BIOS translation is used only withMS-DOS 5.0 or later. It is not necessary to enablethis if you are using another operating system suchas Novell NetWare. When you partition a hard-disk drive larger than1 GB, use the MS-DOS fdisk utility as you normallywould. Because the cylinder size increases to 8 MBunder extended translation, the partition size youchoose must be a multiple of 8 MB. If you request asize that is not a multiple of 8 MB, fdisk rounds upto the nearest whole multiple of 8 MB.• Display Message During BIOS Initializa-tion—This option determines whether the Press for SCSISelect (TM) Util-ity! message appears on your screen during systemstart-up. The Dell factory default setting is Enabled.NOTES: If this setting is disabled, you can still runthe SCSISelect utility by pressing afterthe host adapter BIOS banner appears. The Intel default for this setting is Disabled. Dellenables this option at the factory. However, if youreset the default values, this option will be Disabledand you must reset it to Enabled.CAUTION: If a removable-media SCSI deviceis controlled by the host adapter BIOS, do notremove the media while the drive is on or youmay lose data. If you want to be able to removemedia while the drive is on, install your remov-able-media device driver and set this option toDisabled.CAUTION: Back up your hard-disk drivebefore you change the translation scheme. Alldata is erased when you change from onetranslation scheme to another.
