3-18 Dell PowerEdge 6100/200 System User’s GuideDrive registration is a user-transparent process; no userinteraction is required. You can tell that the drive hasbeen detected as NetWare-tested and -approved if themessage NetWare Yes Tested and Approved isincluded in the drive description string that appears whenyou run monitor.nlm (disk options).Using the NetWare Tape Backup UtilityIncluded with NetWare is a server-based tape backuputility called sbackup.nlm. This allows backup of serverdisk drives to a server tape drive. The sbackup.nlm util-ity supports Adaptec host adapters.1. Load the SCSI adapter driver. The syntax to load the aic7870.dsk driver is:load [pathname] aic7870.dsk [options] slot=xThe ASPI layer (aspitran.dsk) is automaticallyloaded.2. Refer to the Novell NetWare documentation foradditional instructions on loading the serverbackup software and the tsa and sbackup modules.Setting Up a CD-ROM Drive With Net-Ware 4.xTo use a CD-ROM drive with NetWare 4.x, follow theseinstructions:1. Load aic7870.dsk by entering the following com-mand line:load [pathname] aic7870.dsk slot=x2. Load aspicd.dsk by entering the following com-mand line:load [pathname] aspicd.dskNOTE: If aspicd.dsk does not work, unload it andload it again. The first load initializes the hostadapter; unloading and reloading allows the initial-ization to complete.3. Load cdrom.nlm as follows:load [pathname] cdrom.nlm4. Enter the following line at the prompt, and thennote the number and name of the CD-ROM thatappears:cd device list5. Enter the number and volume name of theCD-ROM at the command line:cd mount [number] [name]The CD-ROM is now ready to be accessed as avolume.Optimizing PerformanceThe Adaptec 78xx SCSI bus master firmware increases theSCSI performance of the Adaptec 78xx Family host adapt-ers under multitasking environments. The firmware uses apaging mechanism to handle up to 255 simultaneous SCSIcommands. The sequencer can simultaneously manage upto 32 tagged, or 2 nontagged, SCSI commands for eachSCSI device, up to a limit of 255 SCSI commands. Thefirmware can queue as many commands as the operatingsystem is able to send to the host adapter. To set this fea-ture, enter the following command:max_tags=nIn general, a low number for the max_tags option givesbetter sequential performance. This value varies with thelevel of random disk accesses and drive characteristics.NOTE: A large value for max_tags can cause “starva-tion” problems with some drives.Troubleshooting for NetWareAny error that occurs while the driver is initializing pre-vents it from loading. If an error does occur, the drivercauses the computer to beep and displays a numberederror message:xxx messageThe xxx indicates the error code, and message is adescriptive line describing the error. The error codes aredivided into three categories:000-099 Non–host-adapter specific100-299 Host-adapter specific300-999 ReservedSpecific error codes appear only if you have installed thehost adapters and drivers that generate them.
