Using the System Setup Program 2-1Chapter 2Using the System Setup ProgramEach time you turn on your computer, it compares theinstalled hardware with the system configuration infor-mation stored in NVRAM. If the system detects adiscrepancy, it generates an error message for each incor-rect configuration setting.You can use the System Setup program as follows:• To set or change user-selectable features—for exam-ple, your password or power management features• To verify information about your computer’s currentconfiguration, such as the amount of system memoryFor some setup options, you must reboot the computerbefore any changes take effect. Changes for other optionstake effect immediately.NOTE: If you change an option that is activated byrebooting, the System Setup program displays the settingyou selected rather than the setting currently in effect.You must reboot for the new setting to take effect.After you set up your computer, run the System Setupprogram to familiarize yourself with your systemconfiguration information and optional settings. Dell rec-ommends that you write down the information for futurereference.If the computer is using the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0operating system, you must use the System Setup pro-gram to view and change your system configuration.If the computer is using the Microsoft Win-dows 95 operating system, you can also usethe Dell Control Center to view and changethe system configuration. Access the DellControl Center from the Dell Accessoriesfolder. See the topic titled “Dell Control Center” in theonline System User’s Guide for more information. TheDell Control Center also contains detailed help that givesyou all the information you need to set options.Entering the System SetupProgramEnter and use the System Setup program as follows:If you are using Windows 95, press at anytime on the built-in keyboard (or onan external keyboard if the External Hot Key option isenabled). If you press (or on an external keyboard if the External Hot Key option isenabled), the System Setup program opens directly to thebattery status screen.If you are using Windows NT 4.0 or any other operatingsystem that is not Plug and Play aware, close all openapplication programs and exit the operating system.When prompted, reboot the computer and press (or from an external key-board if the External Hot Key option is enabled). If youwait too long and your operating system begins to loadinto memory, let the system complete the load operation;then shut down the system and try again.In either operating system, press to exit the Sys-tem Setup program. If you change the setting of an optionthat requires rebooting in order to take effect, exit theoperating system before rebooting. (The Help text in theupper-right corner of System Setup screens 1, 2, and 4tells you if the computer must be rebooted.)NOTE: If the System Setup program is running when thecomputer enters suspend mode, the computer exits theSystem Setup program and then activates suspend mode.Using the System Setup ProgramThe System Setup screens display the current setup andconfiguration information and optional settings for your
