If a failure occurs with the drive, make a copy ofthe Diagnostics Checklist found in Chapter 5 and fill itout as you complete the following procedure.NOTE: If you have another hard-disk drive that you knowis in good condition, install it in your computer beforeyou begin this procedure and perform the operation thatcaused you to suspect a hard-disk drive failure. If there isno evidence of a drive failure with the second driveinstalled, the first drive is probably defective. If the sec-ond drive fails, reinstall the first drive and start thefollowing procedure.1. Reboot the computer. Does the drive access indica-tor blink during the boot routine, and does the driveboot the operating system?Yes. Rename your autoexec.bat and config.sys files,remove the operating system diskette from drive A,and reboot the computer. Does the operating systemload now?Yes. You have an error in your autoexec.bat or con-fig.sys file. Use a text editor to examine the contentsof these files and locate the error. For information onthe correct syntax for commands in these files, seethe documentation that came with your operatingsystem.No. Continue to step 6.6. The hard-disk drive may contain a corruptedoperating system or it may have bad sectors. Re-install the operating system as described in thedocumentation that accompanied your operating sys-tem.
