A service technicianmay ask you for this version number if you call Dell fortechnical assistance.NOTE: Dell may periodically offer revisions of the BIOSthat add features or solve specific problems. Because theBIOS for your computer is stored on a reprogrammableflash-memory chip, you can use the Flash BIOS Updateprogram to update your computer’s BIOS entirelythrough software.Boot SequenceBoot Sequence determines which disk device your com-puter uses to find the software needed to start theoperating system.The term boot refers to the computer’s start-up proce-dure. When you turn on the computer, it “bootstraps”itself into an operational state by loading into memory asmall program, which in turn loads the necessary operat-ing system. Boot Sequence tells the computer where tofind the files that it needs to load.Settings for this option are:• Diskette First (the default) — Causes your computerto attempt first to boot from a bootable disketteIf the computer detects no diskette in the diskettedrive, it tries to boot from the hard-disk drive. If thecomputer encounters a diskette without the requiredboot files or detects a problem with the diskettedrive, it displays an error message.• Hard Disk Only — Causes your computer to bootonly from the hard-disk driveIf it fails to boot from the hard-disk drive for any rea-son, your computer does not attempt to boot from thediskette drive.For a change in the Boot Sequence option to take effect,you must reboot your computer.Boot SpeedBoot Speed allows you to choose between the computer’sprocessing speed (the default) and Compatible, a slowercompatibility speed. The compatibility speed varies,depending on the configuration of your system.When you change the setting in the Boot Speed option,the System Setup program stores and continues to displaythe new setting even if you do not reboot your computerwhen you exit the System Setup program. If you start theSystem Setup program again during your current worksession, the processing speed displayed for the BootSpeed option may not match the actual speed at whichyour computer is running.For a change in the Boot Speed option to take effect, youmust reboot your computer.BrightnessBrightness allows you to select the brightness of thedisplay when the computer is operating on battery power.Use the left- and right-arrow keys to change the bright-ness of the display. When the computer is powered by abattery, the default setting for Brightness is the minimum.If the computer is using AC power, the default setting ismaximum.
