Running the Dell Diagnostics 4-9The RAM test group, the Video test group, the Serial/Infrared Ports test group, the Diskette Drives test group,the Parallel Ports test group, the SCSI Devices test group,and the Hard-Disk Drives (Non-SCSI) test group allowyou to designate limits. Whether you select Test Limitsfor a entire test group (from the Main menu) or a singlesubtest (from the Subtest menu), you set the limits for allthe subtests in that test group. When you select Test Lim-its, a new screen appears and the Key Help area lists keys touse with the new screen.How you change a value for the limits of a test group orsubtest depends on the type of parameter associated withit. Different keys are used to change values for differenttypes of parameters. For example, memory address limitsspecified for the RAM test group are changed by typingin numbers over the digits of a given limit or by pressingthe plus (+) or minus (–) key to increase or decrease thegiven limit. In contrast, to set limits for the Serial Portstest group, use the to toggle between Yes andNo.After you are satisfied with the limits, press Down> to select the next menu or submenu in the TestLimits category. Press to return to the main TestLimits menu. The values you selected under Test Limitsremain in effect until you change them or exit the diagnos-tics. The values are reset to their defaults when you restart thediagnostics.AboutAbout in the Main menu displays information about thehighlighted test group, such as limits and parameters andhow to set them.Key-HelpKey-Help displays a list of key controls available for theselected option.QuitSelect Quit from the Main menu (or press ) to exit the diagnostics and return to an MS-DOS prompt.After you return to the operating system environment,remove your diagnostics diskette from drive A and reboot thecomputer.Tests in the Dell DiagnosticsThe diagnostics is organized by components into test groupsand subtests within each test group. Each subtest is designedto detect any errors that may interfere with the normal opera-tion of a specific device of the computer.NOTE: Any subtest requiring hardware not listed in theSystem Configuration area appears to run, but the sub-test concludes with a status message stating Componentnot available.Table 4-2 lists the diagnostic test groups, their subtests,and comments concerning their use.CAUTION: It is important that you quit the diag-nostics program correctly, because the programwrites data to the computer’s memory that cancause problems unless properly cleared.
