Messages and Codes 3-5System Beep CodesWhen an error that cannot be reported on the monitoroccurs during a boot routine, the computer may emit aseries of beeps that identify the problem. The beep code isa pattern of sounds; for example, one beep followed by asecond beep and then a burst of three beeps (code 1-1-3)means that the computer was unable to read the data innonvolatile random-access memory (NVRAM). Thisinformation is valuable to the Dell support staff if youneed to call for technical assistance. When a beep code is emitted, write it down on a copy ofthe Diagnostics Checklist found in Appendix A, and thenlook it up in Table 3-2. If you are unable to resolve theproblem by looking up the meaning of the beep code, usethe system diagnostics to identify a more serious cause. Ifyou are still unable to resolve the problem, see Chap-ter 11, “Getting Help,” for instructions on obtainingtechnical assistance.System memorysize haschanged - RunConfigurationUtilityDIMM memory mayhave been added orremoved, or one or moreDIMMs may be improp-erly seated or faulty.Remove and reseat the DIMMs. See “Removing DIMMs” and“Installing DIMMs” in Chapter 8.
