Messages and Codes 3-7Warning MessagesA warning message alerts you to a possible problem andasks you to do something before execution continues. Forexample, before you format a diskette, a message maywarn you that you may lose all data on the diskette, as away to protect against inadvertently erasing or writingover the data. These warning messages usually interruptthe procedure and require you to respond by typing y(yes) or n (no).NOTE: Warning messages are generated by either theapplication programs or the operating system. SeeChapter 4, “Finding Software Solutions,” and the docu-mentation that accompanied the operating system andapplication programs.Diagnostics MessagesWhen you run a test group or subtest in the system diag-nostics, an error message may result. These particularerror messages are not covered in this chapter. Record themessage on a copy of the Diagnostics Checklist found inAppendix A; then see Chapter 11, “Getting Help,” forinstructions on obtaining technical assistance.Alert Log Messages From theDell HIP ProgramThe Dell Hardware Instrumentation Package (HIP)server management application program generates alertmessages that appear in the simple network managementprotocol (SNMP) trap log file. To see the trap log, selectany enterprise under the SNMP trap log icon. (Moreinformation about the Alert Log window and options isprovided in the Dell HIP online help and the Dell HIPUser’s Guide.)Alert log messages consist of information, status, warn-ing, and failure messages for drive, temperature, fan, andpower conditions. They can assist you with identifying aproblem and may provide you with information to helpyou resolve the problem.SCSI Hard-Disk Drive IndicatorCodesThe three light-emitting diode (LED) indicators adjacentto each of the six SCSI hard-disk drive bays provideinformation on the status of the SCSI hard-disk drives.The SCSI backplane firmware controls the drive online1-4-3-1 Memory controller failure or DIMMfailureCheck the DIMMs to ensure that they are prop-erly seated. If the problem persists, run the RAMTest Group in the system diagnostics. See Chap-ter 5, “Running the System Diagnostics.”2-2-3-1 Unexpected interrupt Ensure that all expansion cards are properlyseated, and then reboot the system.3-2-2-14-2-4-4Gate A20 failure Have the system board replaced.
