7-18 Dell PowerEdge 4200 Systems Installation and Troubleshooting Guide15. Correct the drive-select jumper setting and ter-minator installation.16. Replace the computer covers, reconnect the sys-tem to AC power, and turn on the system.17. Run the Diskette Drives Test Group in the systemdiagnostics to see whether the diskette drive sub-system now works correctly.Do the tests complete successfully?Yes. You have solved the problem.No. See Chapter 11, “Getting Help,” for instructionson obtaining technical assistance.Troubleshooting a SCSI TapeDriveA SCSI tape drive can be an internal device installed inone of the externally accessible drive bays or an externaldevice that attaches to a SCSI host adapter connector onthe back panel of the computer. The SCSI tape drive iscontrolled by a SCSI host adapter installed in the com-puter, which may also control other SCSI devicesconnected to one or more SCSI cables. SCSI devicesoften require device drivers for the particular operatingsystem being used by the computer system.Tape drive problems often result from a defective tapedrive, a defective tape cartridge, or software. Followthese steps to troubleshoot a SCSI tape drive:1. Remove the tape that was in use when the prob-lem occurred, and replace it with a tape that youknow is not defective. Is the problem resolved?Yes. The original tape was defective. Replace it witha new tape. You have fixed the problem.No. Go to step 2.2. Verify that any required SCSI device drivers areinstalled on the hard-disk drive and are config-ured correctly.See Chapter 3, “Installing and Configuring SCSIDrivers,” in the User’s Guide for instructions oninstalling and configuring the SCSI device driversfor the system’s built-in SCSI host adapter or DellPowerEdge Expandable RAID Controller hostadapter card. For any other type of SCSI host adaptercard, see the documentation that accompanied theSCSI host adapter card. Are the drivers installed and configured correctly?Yes. The SCSI device drivers were installed or con-figured incorrectly or were corrupted. You havefixed the problem.No. Go to step 3.3. Reinstall the tape backup software as instructedin the tape-backup software documentation. Is the problem resolved?Yes. The tape backup software was corrupted. Youhave fixed the problem.No. Go to step 4.4. Restart the system and check for the presence ofthe tape drive during the optional read-onlymemory (ROM) scan sequence. Is the problem resolved?Yes. The drive is correctly cabled and is receivingpower. Go to step 9.No. Go to step 5.5. Turn off the system, including any attachedperipherals, and disconnect all the AC powercables from their power sources.6. Remove both computer covers.See “Removing the Computer Covers” found earlierin this chapter.7. Check the SCSI cable connections to the tapedrive and to the SCSI host adapter connector. Ifthe tape drive is an internal device, check the DCpower cable connection to the tape drive. Are the cables firmly connected?Yes. Go to step 9.No. Go to step 8.CAUTION: See “Protecting Against Electro-static Discharge” in the safety instructions atthe front of this guide.
