Chapter 4. Removal and Replacement ProceduresThis chapter describes the procedures to follow when removing and replacing thefield replaceable units (FRUs), such as the 7208 Tape Drive cover, drive, powersupply, and cooling fan. It also describes how to manually remove a tape cartridge.DANGERTo prevent a possible electrical shock from touching two surfaces withdifferent electrical grounds, use one hand, when possible, to connect ordisconnect signal cables. (RSFTD004)DANGERTo prevent a possible electrical shock when adding or removing any devicesto or from the system, ensure that the power cords for those devices areunplugged before the signal cables are connected or disconnected. If possible, disconnect all power cords from the existing system before you add orremove a device. (RSFTD203)Before installing any FRU, let it acclimate to the operating environment for as longas it has been away from the environment or for 12 hours, whichever is less.Handling Static-Sensitive DevicesAttention: Tape drives are sensitive to static electricity discharge. When handlinga tape drive, wrap it in an antistatic bag to prevent damage.Take the following precautions:v Do not remove the drive from the antistatic bag until you are ready to install it.v With the drive still in its antistatic bag, touch it to the metal frame of anelectrically grounded surface.v Hold the drive by the frame. Avoid touching the solder joints or pins.v Handle the drive carefully to prevent permanent damage.© Copyright IBM Corp. 2000 25
