Before you place the computer in an upright position, rotate the two front feet aquarter turn away from the computer, see “Installing options in a tower model”on page 44 for details.v Back up all important data before you make changes to hard disk drives.v Have a small, flat-blade screwdriver available.v For a list of supported options for your computer, refer tohttp://www.ibm.com/pc/support on the World Wide Web.System reliability considerationsTo help ensure proper cooling and system reliability, make sure that:v Each of the drive bays has a drive or a filler panel and electromagneticcompatibility (EMC) shield installed.v There is space around the computer to allow the computer cooling system towork properly. Leave about 127 mm (5 in.) of space around the front and rear ofthe computer.v Cables for optional adapters are routed according to the instructions that areprovided with the adapters.v A failed fan is replaced within 1 hour.Handling static-sensitive devicesAttention: Static electricity can damage electronic devices and your system. Toavoid damage, keep static-sensitive devices in their static-protective bag until youare ready to install them.To reduce the possibility of electrostatic discharge, observe the followingprecautions.v Limit your movement. Movement can cause static electricity to build up aroundyou.v Handle the device carefully, holding it by its edges or its frame.v Do not touch solder joints, pins, or exposed printed circuitry.v Do not leave the device where others can handle and possibly damage thedevice.v While the device is still in its anti-static package, touch it to an unpainted metalpart of the system unit for at least two seconds. (This drains static electricityfrom the package and from your body.)v Remove the device from its package and install it directly into your system unitwithout setting it down. If it is necessary to set the device down, place it on itsstatic-protective package. (If your device is an adapter, place it component sideup.) Do not place the device on your system unit cover or on a metal table.v Take additional care when handling devices during cold weather as heatingreduces indoor humidity and increases static electricity.38 IBM®IntelliStation®E Pro: User’s Guide IntelliStation E Pro Types 6836, 6846
