v A removed hot-swap drive is replaced within two minutes of removal.v Cables for optional adapters are routed according to the instructions providedwith the adapters.v A failed fan is replaced within 48 hours.Working inside a server with power onYour server supports hot-plug, hot-add, and hot-swap devices and it is designed tooperate safely while turned on with the cover removed. Follow these guidelineswhen you work inside a server that is turned on:v Avoid loose-fitting clothing on your forearms. Button long-sleeved shirts beforeworking inside the server; do not wear cuff links while you are working insidethe server.v Do not allow your necktie to hang inside the server.v Remove jewelry, such as bracelets, necklaces, and loose-fitting wrist watches.v Remove items from your shirt pocket (such as pens or pencils) that could fallinto the server as you lean over it.v Take care to avoid dropping any metallic objects, such as paper clips, hair pins,or screws, into the server.Handling static-sensitive devicesStatic electricity, though harmless to you, can seriously damage server componentsor options.Note: When you are adding an internal option, do not open the static-protectivepackage containing the option until you are instructed to do so.When you handle options and other server components, take these precautions toavoid damage from static electricity:v Limit your movement. Movement can cause static electricity to build up aroundyou.v Always handle components carefully. Handle adapters, the memory board, andmemory modules (DIMMs) by the edges. Never touch any exposed circuitry.v Prevent others from touching components.v When you are installing a new option, touch the static-protective packagecontaining the option to a metal expansion-slot screw or other unpainted metalsurface on the server for at least two seconds. (This reduces static electricityfrom the package and from your body.)v When possible, remove the option and install it directly into the server withoutsetting the option down. When this is not possible, place the static-protectivepackage that the option comes in on a smooth, level surface and place the optionon it.v Do not place the option on the server’s covers or any metal surface.Installing options 43
