7-2 Netopia ISDN Router Reference GuideSuggested security measuresIn addition to setting up user accounts, Telnet access, CNA, andfilters (all of which are covered later in this chapter), there are otheractions you can take to make the Netopia ISDN Router and yournetwork more secure:n If you will be using a PC Card modem for dial-up access througha telephone line, keep the phone number secure and be sure toset passwords to protect the configuration screens.n If you expect a lot of Internet traffic, consider setting up IPfilters to keep out certain types of Internet connections.n Change the SNMP community strings (or passwords). Thedefault community strings are universal and could easily beknown to a potential intruder.n Set the answer profile so it must match incoming calls to aconnection profile or hang up.n Where possible, insist on using PAP or CHAP to authenticateconnections to and from connection profiles.n When using AURP, accept connections only from configuredpartners.n Configure the Netopia ISDN Router through the console port toensure that your communications cannot be intercepted.User accountsWhen you first set up and configure the Netopia ISDN Router, nopasswords are required to access the configuration screens.Anyone could tamper with the router’s configuration by simplyconnecting it to a console. However, by adding user accounts, you can protect the mostsensitive screens from unauthorized access. User accounts arecomposed of name/password combinations that can be given toauthorized users.
