5-4 Netopia ISDN Router Reference GuideNetBIOSNetBIOS is a protocol that performs tasks related to the Transportand Session layers of the OSI model. It can operate over IPX, usinga special broadcast packet known as “IPX Packet type 20” tocommunicate with IPX NetBIOS servers.IPX SpoofingThe Netopia has several IPX features designed to restrict the trafficon the ISDN link when the unit is not sending or receiving IPX data. When the link is idle and a user is logged into a Novell server, theserver will send “keep alive” packets to ensure the user is stillthere. If the link is idle, the “keep alive” packets will be sent back tothe server by the locally connected Netopia router as though theycame back from the user without bringing up the ISDN link.Similarly, “SPX keep alive” packets are treated in this manner. IPXRIP, and SAP messages will not be sent if the link is down. Togetherthese features enable the user to remain connected to a Novellserver or SPX peer without bringing up the ISDN link, except to sendand receive actual user data.IPX setupThe IPX Setup screen is where you configure the Ethernet side ofthe Netopia ISDN Router for IPX. The information you enter herecontrols how the router routes IPX traffic. Consult your networkadministrator to obtain the information you will need, beforechanging any of the settings.Changes made in this screen will only take effect after the NetopiaISDN Router is reset.MainMenuAdvancedConfig.NetworkProtocols SetupIPXSetup
