4-18 Netopia ISDN Router Reference GuideIP address servingIn addition to being a router, the Netopia ISDN Router is also an IPaddress server. There are four protocols it can use to distribute IPaddresses.n The first, called Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), iswidely supported on PC networks, as well as Apple Macintoshcomputers using Open Transport and computers using the UNIXoperating system. Addresses assigned via DHCP are “leased” orallocated for a short period of time; if a lease is not renewed, theaddress becomes available for use by another computer. DHCPalso allows most of the IP parameters for a computer to beconfigured by the DHCP server, simplifying setup of eachmachine.n The second, called BOOTP (also known as Bootstrap Protocol), isthe predecessor to DHCP and allows older IP hosts to obtainmost of the information that a DHCP client would obtain. However, in contrast, BOOTP address assignments are“permanent” since there is no lease renewal mechanism inBOOTP.n The third protocol, called IPCP, is part of the PPP/MP suite ofwide area protocols used for ISDN WAN connections. It allowsremote terminal adapters and NAT-enabled routers to beassigned a temporary IP address for the duration of theirconnection.MainMenuAdvancedConfig.IPAddressServing• DHCP Setup•BOOTP Setup• MacIP Setup
