3-1Chapter 3Connecting Your Local NetworkIn this chapter, you will learn how to physically connect the NetopiaISDN Router to your local area network (LAN). Before you proceed, make sure the Netopia ISDN Router is properly configured. Youshould have configured the Router using Easy Setup or with customsettings.OverviewYou can connect the Netopia ISDN Router to an IP or IPX networkthat uses Ethernet. If you have a PC LAN using IP over Ethernet, youcan connect it to the Netopia ISDN Router’s Ethernet port. You canalso connect the Router to an AppleTalk network that uses eitherEthernet or LocalTalk.AppleTalk networks based on Ethernet cabling (EtherTalk) connect toall models of the Router through their Ethernet ports. AppleMacintosh computers using native IP also connect to the Router’sEthernet port.AppleTalk networks based on LocalTalk cabling connect to the 400series models through their LocalTalk ports. If you have both kindsof AppleTalk networks, you can connect one to the Netopia ISDNRouter’s LocalTalk port and the other to its Ethernet port. AppleTalktraffic will be routed between these two networks.Caution! Before connecting the Netopia ISDN Router to any AppleTalk LANsthat contain other AppleTalk routers, you should read “Routers andseeding” in “AppleTalk Networks” on page 6-1.See the sections later in this chapter for details on how to connectthe Netopia ISDN Router to the two types of networks.
