Chapter 17 Performing HotSync ® Operations306Conducting IR HotSync operationsYou can use the infrared (IR) port on your handheld to perform HotSyncoperations. When you perform an IR HotSync operation, you don't need yourcradle/cable. However, you must have a computer that’s equipped with an IR portand that supports the IrCOMM implementation of the Infrared Data Association(IrDA) standards. This is especially useful if you travel with an infrared-enabledlaptop. You simply enable infrared communication on your laptop and handheldand follow the steps in “Performing an IR HotSync operation” later in this section.Preparing your computer for infrared communicationBefore you can perform a HotSync operation using the IR port, the computer withwhich you want to synchronize must fulfill these requirements: Your computer must support the IrCOMM implementation of the IrDAstandards. Your computer must have an enabled infrared port that’s built into thecomputer, or an enabled infrared device attached to the computer. Some desktop computers may require an infrared device attached to a physicalCOM port. Laptops are likely to have a built-in IR port, so no external device isnecessary. Your computer must have an installed infrared driver. If you have an external infrared device attached to your computer, a driver isprobably included with the device. Consult the documentation included withthe device for information on installing the required driver.Check your computer’s documentation to learn if the computer supports infraredcommunication. To configure HotSync Manager for infrared communication on a Windows computer: Click the HotSync Manager icon in the Windows system tray, and make surethat Infrared is checked.– If you have an Infrared option on the HotSync Manager menu, and thatoption is selected, skip to “Performing an IR HotSync operation.”– If you do not have an Infrared option on the HotSync Manager menu, complete the following steps:a. Make sure that Local Serial is selected on the menu.b. From the HotSync Manager menu, select Setup.c. Click the Local tab.
