Appendix A Maintaining Your Handheld368Battery considerationsPlease note the following considerations for the battery in your handheld: Under normal conditions, you can keep your handheld battery charged byplacing it in the cradle between 30 and 60 minutes each day. You can conservebattery life by changing the Auto-off setting that automatically turns thehandheld off after a period of inactivity and by selecting the Conserve Poweroption in Wi-Fi preferences. See “Auto-off delay” in Chapter 18 and see “Wi-Fipreferences” in Chapter 18 for more information. If the battery becomes low in the course of normal use, an alert appears on thehandheld screen describing the low battery condition. If this alert appears, perform a HotSync ® operation to back up your data; then leave your handheldin the cradle to recharge the unit. This helps prevent accidental data loss. If the battery becomes too low, the wireless operations are disabled to savebattery strength. If the battery drains to the point where your handheld does not operate, it storesyour data safely for about five days. In this case, there is enough residual energyin the battery to store the data, but not enough to turn on your handheld. If yourhandheld does not turn on when you press the power button, you shouldrecharge the unit immediately. The battery may not have enough residualenergy to power the indicator light, which normally displays green whencharging. If your battery drains and you have the unit in an uncharged state for anextended period of time, you can lose all of the stored data. There are no serviceable parts inside your handheld, so do not attempt to openthe unit. If you ever dispose of your handheld, please dispose of it without damaging theenvironment. Take your handheld to your nearest environmental recyclingcenter.Resetting your handheldUnder normal circumstances, you will not have to use the reset button. On rareoccasions, however, your handheld may no longer respond to buttons or thescreen. In this case, you need to perform a reset to get your handheld runningagain.Performing a soft resetA soft reset tells your handheld to stop what it’s doing and start over again. Allrecords and entries stored in your handheld are retained with a soft reset. After asoft reset, the Welcome screen appears, followed by the Date and Time Preferencesscreen (to set date and time).
