164Chapter 4 Paper Out AdjustmentPaper Out AdjustmentThis procedure tests and sets the distance from the page perforation at whicha LOAD PAPER fault message is triggered. This adjustment prevents printingon the platen when the printer runs out of paper. The measurement units are dot rows. You will use the dot row patterns printed by the Paperout Adj. test to verifythat this parameter is set correctly.NOTE: Do this procedure only if a new paper detector switch assembly hasbeen installed, the controller board has been replaced, or if you aresure the paper out adjustment is incorrect. A paper out triggeringdistance of 1 or 2 dot rows above the perforation is acceptable; 5 to 7dot rows above or any dot rows below indicates adjustment isrequired. Also, although it is not required, it is advisable to test thepaper out triggering distance with 6-part paper, in order to verifycorrect printing with multi-part forms. The procedure below describes how to run the Paperout Adj. test and modifythe paper out “Dots” value.1. Open the printer cover.2. On cabinet models, open the cabinet front door.3. Load paper. Make sure the forms thickness lever is closed.4. Power on the printer.5. On the sheet of paper just below the paper entrance slot, cut or tear a fourinch square on the left side, immediately below the perforation.(See Figure 14.) This creates a hole that will trigger a LOAD PAPER faultmessage, but allows printing to the right of the hole (which would occur onthe platen in a true paper out condition).6. Cut or tear a four inch square in the manner described above, on everythird sheet, until you have made 3 or 4 holes.Figure 14.
