TASCAM DA-98HR 275 – Monitoring modesNOTEWe strongly advise you to read this section—the effectiveuse of multitrack monitoring is one of the keys to an effi-cient recording session.Like all multitrack recorders, the DA-98HR has anumber of different monitoring modes, depending onthe current monitor status, transport status andwhether the track is armed or not.In addition to the “standard” modes common to mostmultitrack recorders, the DA-98HR includes two spe-cial monitoring features: the CONFIDENCE MODE4, and the individual track INPUT MONITORswitches . These are described in this section.5.1 Monitoring controlsThe controls which affect monitoring are:• ALL INPUT h• INPUT MONITOR f• REC FUNCTION e• CONFIDENCE MODE 4• AUTO MON i5.1.1 ALL INPUT and INPUT MONITORWhen these are active, the signal from the DA-98HR’s outputs will always be the input source sig-nal received at the input for the appropriate track ortracks. When the ALL INPUT key is pressed, its indicatorand the INPUT MONITOR indicators of all trackslight. Monitoring for all tracks is then of the inputsources. When the ALL INPUT key is pressed again to turn offthis mode, the status of the INPUT MONITOR indica-tors will revert to the status before the ALL INPUTkey was turned on.The INPUT MONITOR switches are disabled until theALL INPUT key is turned off (the ALL INPUT indica-tor goes out). The INPUT MONITOR switches allow you to performthe same function on a track-by-track basis, allowingyou to check the input source, and are available froma number of modes as described in the table below.5.1.2 AUTO MONWhen replaying a track, you will usually want tomonitor the program material recorded on the tape. However, there are times when you want to monitorthe source input rather than the recorded signal, evenin play mode. The following table shows what will be monitoredfrom a track. This depends on the AUTO MON andthe REC FUNCTION switch settings, and on thetransport mode currently engaged. The AUTO MON function therefore allows you toswitch automatically between monitoring modes asthe tape transport function changes.NOTEThe ALL INPUT key overrides the monitoring mode fromthe table above (when this mode is active, monitoring for alltracks will always be source monitoring, regardless of thestatus of AUTO MON).5.1.3 Shuttle monitoringIn addition to these modes, there is one further menuitem, that affects monitoring, but only in one specialcase – shuttle mode. Usually, when shuttling the tape, you will want to monitor the tape. However, if a trackis armed, you may want to listen to the source inputsignal, rather than the recorded signals.NOTEALL INPUT overrides any shuttle monitoring selectionsdescribed below. Any shuttle monitoring while ALLINPUT is on will always be source monitoring. To turn shuttle monitoring on and off:AUTO MONREC FUNCTION(track arming)PLAYRECORDSTOP, etc.ON ON Tape Source SourceON OFF Selectableaa. “Selectable” as used here means that individual tracks’INPUT MONITOR switches can be used to switch betweensource and tape monitoring. Tape monitoring is obviouslyonly possible when the tape is moving (in recording or play-back modes).Selectable SelectableOFF ON Selectable Sourcebb. Confidence mode (5.3, “Confidence mode”) is possible inthis mode (AUTO MON off and REC FUNCTION on) andwhen confidence mode is active, the monitoring is selectablebetween source and tape.SelectableOFF OFF Selectable Selectable Selectable
