TASCAM DA-98HR 316 – Basic OperationsThis section explains some of the basic operationsusing the DA-98HR. Section 7, “Advanced opera-tions” describes more advanced operations. Most operations on a DA-98HR are similar to thoseon a traditional analog multitrack recorder, but wesuggest that you read this section and the next tolearn about the features of the DA-98HR.6.1 Word sync settingsThe DA-98HR is capable of accepting word syncclock data from a variety of sources. It is essentialthat in a digital audio setup, all devices share thesame word sync clock, otherwise damage may becaused to monitoring equipment, etc.The different clock sources available, as shown onthe front panel indicators are:6.1.1 Selecting the word sync clock1 Press the CLOCK key j so that the appropri-ate indicator lights.NOTEIn the case of a setup where the DA-98HR is the only digi-tal device in the system (connected to the analog mixingconsole through the optional IF-AD98HR analog I/O slotboards), you should not select the SLOT setting (this is foroptional digital I/O boards). If a selected word sync clock source is not connectedor powered up, the clock is out of the permissiblerange, or is otherwise not available for use, then theindicator will flash, and an appropriate message willbe shown on the display.6.1.2 Setting the AES/EBU channel forthe word sync sourceWhen selecting the AES/EBU source for the wordsync source, please note the following:• Even if the AES/EBU digital audio source is notthe audio source (6.3.2, “Selecting the digitalsource”), the AES/EBU source can still be selectedas the word sync clock source using the CLOCKkey.• All AES/EBU sources must be at the same fre-quency, etc. before they can be selected as clocksources. An error message will be shown on screenif they differ. To view and change the AES/EBU source:1 Go to menu group A, and move the cursor toAesEbuClk. Press ENTER:2 The current available track settings (6.2.1,“Available tracks” are displayed, and theappropriate signal can be chosen using the §and ¶ keys.In the case of dual- or quad-frequency tracksbeing selected and multi-line being selected(3.1.3, “Digital audio connections (using AES/EBU)”), the AES/EBU channels are “bundled”so that one set of channels can act as a clocksource.3 Press the CLOCK key until the AES/EBU indi-cator lightsIf the selected input is invalid or disconnected,an appropriate message is shown and outputsignals are muted. Press the ESCAPE key toreset the error message.6.1.3 Clock range with slot boardWhen the IF-AN98HR optional slot boards are fitted,it is possible to select the internal PLL clock source(and hence the clock range) for these boards.1 Go to menu group D, move the cursor toIoCkRange, and press ENTER:2 Use the § and ¶ keys to select betweenWide (an LC oscillator) and Narrow (acrystal oscillator) as the PLL clock source forthe boards.Indicator MeaningINT The DA-98HR acts as a word clock sync master, using its internal clockWORD The WORD SYNC IN BNC connector is usedas the word clock sourceVIDEO The word clock source is derived from the signal atthe VIDEO IN connectorAES/EBU One of the AES/EBU digital audio sources isused as the word sync clock sourceSLOT If an optional audio interface board has been fitted, this may be used as a word sync clock sourceA E S / E B U C l o c k1 9 2 k 9 6 k 4 8 k0 2 4c h 2I O B o a r d C l k R a n g eN a r r o w
