6 – Basic Operations–OverdubbingTASCAM DA-98HR 352 Adjust the input signal levels so that the trackmeters read high, but the OVER segment doesnot light.NOTEUse the reference level you have chosen (7.7, “Referencelevels”) to be your “nominal” level.3 Hold down the RECORD key, and press thePLAY key. The tape starts to move and record-ing starts. The REC FUNCTION indicators of all trackslight steadily. When you start recording, the point at whichrecording starts is automatically stored intomemory for punch-in purposes.4 To stop recording and stop the tape, press theSTOP key. You can also press the PLAY key, which will continue the tape movement, butstop recording.6.3.6 Recording the basic tracks (ii)This is an alternative method of recording basictracks on a blank, formatted tape.1 Arm the tracks and adjust the levels asdescribed in [1] and [2] above (6.3.5, “Record-ing the basic tracks (i)”).The REC FUNCTION indicators of all armedtracks flash.2 Press the PLAY key. The tape starts to move.3 When you reach the point at which you want tostart recording, press the RECORD key.The REC FUNCTION indicators of all armedtracks will light steadily. The point at which recording starts is automat-ically stored into memory for punch-inpurposes.4 Stop recording as described above.6.3.7 Replaying the first tracksWhen you have positioned the tape at the beginningof the recording you have just made (or at the pre-rollpoint), you can start playing back the tape.1 Turn off the RECORD FUNCTION key of thetrack you have just recorded.Though it is not strictly necessary, we suggestturning off the RECORD FUNCTION on allarmed tracks (or using the ALL SAFE key g).This will prevent you from accidentally hittingthe RECORD key and going into record mode, overwriting what you have already recorded.2 Make sure that the INPUT MONITOR of thetrack you have just recorded is turned off(5.1.1, “ALL INPUT and INPUT MONI-TOR”).3 Rewind the tape to the point that you startedrecording (use the PREROLL key to find thisposition easily, as the point at which recordingstarted is automatically stored) and pressPLAY.If the AUTO PLAY indicator I is lit, playbackwill automatically start when the location pointis reached.6.4 OverdubbingOverdubbing subsequent tracks is carried out in avery similar way to recording the first tracks. If you are unsure about the difference between moni-toring modes as implemented on the DA-98HR, nowis a good time to read the section 5, “Monitoringmodes”.Obviously you will want to record while you listen tothe signals from previously-recorded tracks and theinput source on tracks where recording is takingplace.Note, however, that the use of confidence mode whenoverdubbing (5.3, “Confidence mode”) is not recom-mended, as the off-tape replay signals will bedelayed, making it impossible to provide accuratecues.6.5 Track bouncingThough the DA-98HR provides a method of copyingfrom track to track digitally (6.3.3, “Selecting inputsources”), there is no way of combining tracks withinthe DA-98HR.If you need to combine tracks, this must be donethrough an external console, routing all tracks to becombined through an output group, and routing thatgroup to the appropriate track input.6.6 Punch-in and punch-outThere are a number of ways in which the DA-98HRcan be used to perform reliable punch-in and punch-outs automatically. Punch points can be set and
