8 – DTRS synchronization–Machine offset52 TASCAM DA-98HRNOTENOTENone of these emulations provides full control of all facili-ties available on the DA-98HR from the remote control unit.If the remote control unit does not support the DA-98HR,select DA-98 as the emulation. If the controller doesnot support the DA-98, select DA-88 as the emulation.8.4 Machine offsetIt is sometimes necessary to offset a slave unit in thechain relative to the master unit. This offset can beset to sub-frame accuracy to a maximum value of±02:00:00:00.NOTEThis offset is unrelated to timecode offset and refers only tothe machine offset when synchronized to other DTRSunits.8.4.1 Setting machine offset1 Select menu group 3, move the cursor to McnOffset, and press ENTER:2 Select the sub-frame units for the offset (eithersamples or 1/100ths of a frame) by moving thecursor to the bottom rightmost field and usingthe § and ¶ keys to choose between sm (sam-ples) and sf (1/100 frame sub-frames). Notethat between the time and the sub-frame type, there is an AUTO OFFSET setting, explained in 8.4.3, “Setting machine offset “onthe fly””)3 Use the Ó and Á keys to select the field to beedited (hours, minutes, seconds or frames) andthe § and ¶ keys to change the value of thatfield. You can use the function keys as number keys(4.4, “Using the function keys as numberkeys”) to enter the value directly. You can also change the sign of the offset valuebetween + and - by moving the cursor to thesign and using the § and ¶ keys or by usingthe +/– key P with the 10KEY indicator lit.8.4.2 Cancelling machine offsetTo cancel machine offset, simply set the offset valueto 00:00:00:00.1 Press and hold down the § key and press the¶ key to reset the value in the MachineOffset menu (see above).Machine offset is now cancelled.8.4.3 Setting machine offset “on thefly”As well as entering an absolute number, it is alsopossible to enter a number “on the fly” as the tapesare playing.1 On the slave machine where the offset is to beset, select menu group 3, move the cursor toMcn Offset, and press ENTER.2 Make sure chase mode (8.2.3, “Master/slavesettings (CHASE mode)”) is off on the slaveunit.3 Use the Ó and Á keys to move the cursor toan “invisible” field to the right of the sub-frames field4 Locate the two tapes (master and slave) so thatthey have the right offset. You can play the tapes and pause them aftercueing them up, or carry out the next opera-tion while either one or both of the tapes isbeing played back.5 Press either the § or ¶ key on the slavemachine at the correct offset time to captureand store the offset. The captured difference between the masterand slave tapes is be displayed on the bottomline of the display screen and stored as themachine offset.NOTESThe value entered in this way can be edited later using thetechnique described above. You cannot determine the offset from an unformatted tape,or if either tape is currently displaying a negative ABSvalue.8.4.4 An example of setting offsetsA practical example of setting offsets is given here. The master DA-98HR contains the tape with the dia-log and reference tracks from the video worktape.M a c h i n e O f f s e ts a m p l e s u b f r a m eA B S+ 0 0 : 1 2 : 3 8 : 0 0 . 0 0 0 0 s mM a c h i n e O f f s e ts a m p l e s u b f r a m eA B SA U T O O F F S E T
