9 – Operations related to timecode–Recording timecodeTASCAM DA-98HR 59cases, we suggest that you use the internal generator orthe tape as sources for recording timecode. If you are recording timecode only, we suggest that you donot use external sources for recording timecode.Set Tape as the source as described immediatelyabove, and use ABS or ABS-Ofs (9.2.2, “ABSsetting” and 9.2.3, “ABS-Ofs setting”) as tape time-code sources. This will ensure an accurate relation-ship between the timecode and the ABS timingreference (the fact that the generator must be startedmanually means that there will not be a tight relationbetween timecode and the ABS timing). This will also allow you to synchronize multipleDTRS units accurately to external timecode, even ifthe slave units are not timecode-based.If TcTrack is set as the Tape TC mode (9.2.1,“TcTrack setting”), and Tape is selected as thetimecode source, the display shows Tape(Assemble). See 9.3.4, “Assembling time-code” for details of how to use this function.9.3.2 Recording timecode using thegenerator1 Insert a formatted tape into the DA-98HR.It is also possible to format and stripe a newtape simultaneously, by setting up the format-ting procedure as described in 6.2, “Format-ting a tape” and then following the instructionsbelow.2 Select timecode as the timing reference (9.1.3,“Selecting TC or ABS timing”).3 From menu group 8, select a frame rate (9.4,“Selecting the frame rate”).4 From menu group 8, move the cursor toTcRec Src (source for timecoderecording) and press ENTER:5 Use the § and ¶ keys to select the source ofthe timecode as Generator TC.6 Go to menu group 8, move the cursor to GenStart (generator start time) and pressENTER:7 Use the Ó and Á keys to select the field(hours, minutes, seconds or frames) to beedited, and the § and ¶ keys to change thevalue. You can also use the function keys as numberkeys to input the value directly, as described in4.4, “Using the function keys as number keys”.8 Go to menu group 8, move the cursor to GenMode (generator mode) and press ENTER:9 Press the TC REC key k. The indicator startsto flash.10 With the cursor under the Run/Stop onthe display, press the § or ¶ key to start thetimecode generator. The tape counter showsthe generated timecode, as does the display.11 Press and hold the RECORD and press thePLAY key and the tape starts recording time-code. The TC REC indicator lights steadily.12 Press the § or ¶ key with the cursor underthe Run/Stop on the display to stop thetimecode generator. You can also start recording and then start the time-code generator. In this case, an warning messageappears on the display screen as you start recording,to tell you that there is no timecode source. If the Mode field is set to Continue ratherthan Reset, stopping the generator and then re-starting it picks up the timecode values from where itleft off.Conversely, setting this field to Reset restartsfrom the start time set above every time the generatoris stopped and re-started.It is also possible to “drop into” timecode recordingby starting the transport in record mode and thenT C R e c o r d S o u r c eG e n e r a t o r T CG e n e r a t e S t a r t T i m e0 0 : 0 0 : 0 0 : 0 0 3 0 N DG e n e r a t e M o d e0 0 : 5 5 : 0 0 : 0 0 3 0 N DR u n / S t o p M o d eS t o p R e s e t
